Faye Bennett

Being the first to accomplish anything worthwhile takes great effort.  For Faye Bennett there were many firsts:

  • First female US sailing Judge in the US
  • First women to compete in the U. S. Men’s Championship
  • First women to chair the U.S. Junior championship’s Committee
  • First women to join the US sailing’s Board of Directors
  • First women to be Commodore of the NJYRA

Faye was a past chair of the US Sailing Women’s Sailing Committee as well as the Women’s and Junior Championships Committees.  She was a Vice President of the U. S. Sailing Foundation, a member of the U.S. Sailing’s President’s Club and numerous other US Sailing committees and councils.

In addition to serving as a NJYRA Flag Officer, Faye was the NJYRA Recording Secretary for many years.  She was also a long time official within the Long Beach Island YRA and a Flag Officer at her home Spray Beach Yacht Club.

In 2002 she was awarded US Sailing’s highest honor the Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy for her contributions to the sport of sailing.  Faye, with the help of her husband Jake, committed her time, talent and resources to the sport of sailing from the time she herself was a junior sailor at the Ocean City Yacht Club (NJ) in the 1940s until her passing in August 2008.
